So here's one problem I've spotted (with the program):

Final Drive Ratio 3.73 Ratio
Speed Pulses Per Mile 97496 Pls/Mi
Speed Sensor Pulses Per Rev. 30 Pls/Rev
Trans Output Shaft Revs Per Mile 2442.01 Rev/Mi

Sensor Pulses Per Rev looks wrong mathematically. Thinking it should be 40.

I've written online to the mfr. No reply in a couple of days. Next we'll try phoning.

I'd particularly like to know WHY it's 30 there. Is this a calculated value by the program (shouldn't be, it's listed as a parameter, should be read off of the PCM)?

If it was read off of the PCM, then it disagrees with the other figures above.

A possible explanation is that instead of a transmission speed sensor, maybe that figure is for a wheel sensor in the ABS system, and has been mislabeled in the program.

If you look at the third screenshot in my earlier post, that's a tool for adjusting the speedo reading (and everything else dependent on speed). Notice that there, the current sensor pulses per revolution IS 40. So why the discrepancy?

Well no luck either phoning and explaining the problem at JET, It got me only, "Let me interrupt you there, we no longer handle customer support requests over the phone. Email only."

So, third time is the charm....I asked for the email address, wrote the problem up and sent it in. The reply was, yes the 30 figure was wrong, it should have been 40.

I asked if this was a calculated figure or an actual read figure from the PCM. The rep said it was a read, and asked that I send in my PCM's calibration file, "but heads up, it'll be some time before we can look at it."

I wrote back that I wasn't comfortable re-programing my PCM with unexplained parameter errors. I said if they couldn't say when they would look at the issue I was concerned about it maybe taking longer than the return window, if I had to (This was a $400+ purchase.)

The rep simply replied that it would take longer than the return window, so I could return it if I didn't want to wait.

So that's what I did.

Sorry folks, but not worth it to me.

I didn't have trouble installing the JET software on Win7. I received version 2.32. Your reference is to an earlier version.

I also don't think it reflects poorly on Summit Racing, since they immediately accepted it for return. The problem was with incorrect parameter(s) shown by the editor.

There are free software PCM readers, and editors available. However, not for the GM "black box" PCM on a '96 Silverado. Only the JET programmer was suitable. It contains both a hardware dongle, and the software.

Free software editors and programmers do work on later PCM's such as the 0411.

It is possible to swap an 0411 for the present black box PCM in my truck, but it's non-trivial re. wiring, and the PCM would require firmware parameter changes.

Besides the software and PCM swap, a hardware interface/dongle is required that can write to the OBDII port in the truck.

Despite the complexity, I'm pretty sure that is the route I'm going to go down now, and I'm researching all the pieces of the puzzle to make sure it is what I want to do.

The present tentative plan is to use TunerPro as the editor, and PCMHammer as the programmer. Both are free but TunerPro at least is not open source.

The dongle would be an OBDX Pro VT which is far more reasonable in cost than JET was, and works with PCMHammer. Also this combination would be usable without any licensing restrictions re. the number of different PCMs you can program.

You know there was a hardware change/upgrade(Ώ) on post win 7 hardware? Possibly the real reason it doesn't interchange

I've ordered the OBDX Pro VT interface module, so guess I'm committed now to TunerPro and PCHammer, both of which I've also downloaded and played around with. Now I have to order an 0411 PCM. I could get one pre-programmed for the Silverado for $260, or get one for a GM van that will work with just a few program changes for $159.

I'm tending towards the lower priced one, because if I'm setting up like this to do ECM programing, I kinda want to program it. More interesting....

A used 0411 GM PCM is ordered and coming, with connectors. Dongle to connect ODB2 port to laptop is ordered and on the way. I ordered a female ODB2 port connector in order to make up a bench harness, a bench DC power supply, some mini-boxes and toggle switches, all of which have arrived already.

I've got PC Hammer (the PCM reader/programmer) running in WINE on Linux, and also TunerPro (PCM editor) and Universal Patcher (PCM Editor) also seemingly running in useful fashion on WINE. If they do have problems there, I can alternatively run them in a Win7 Qemu virtual machine.

I also ordered a scrap "black box" PCM, like the one in my Silverado now. My idea is to cut its ports off, and make up an adapter harness using the 0411 connectors that just plugs the new 0411 PCM into the existing truck's harness.

Usually in a swap people re-pin the 0411 connectors using the existing truck harness -- very involved. That's more of a permanent swap. I'd like to test the swap first before committing, and making an adapter cable would let me switch back to the old PCM easily, if I wanted. I haven't heard of anybody doing that, but I thought it was worth a try since the scrap blackbox pcm was cheap enough to give it a shot.

So I'm pretty close to wreaking havoc.......
