It's also illegal here but, since it's nearly impossible to enforce, no-one seems to care if it's illegal. My grandpa used to do it before getting his 1st pickup with EFI, a Toyota Hilux, which also has an A/T.

I believe its to do with not having the ability to accellerate the car instantly (e.g. to avoid an obstruction/collision)

But I'd have to check..

TBH I dont think it makes much difference in a 4 squirts per rev old mech injected car like mine.

I've checked the Highway Code and can't find any specific references apart from some vague waffle about being in full control which I believe I would be. I also can't see how this would be enforced as Mr/Ms Rooster says above.

Believe me it makes a difference. I can tell what is Berta's FE when coasting in neutral vs coasting with engine off.

When I'm coasting in neutral at 80km/h with engine on MPGuino shows ~90-100km/l vs infinity with engine off. So for the whole tank it's quite a difference. Depends of how much you coast of course.

Last tank statistics:
I was coasting with DFCO or engine off for 82km if we count let's say 90km/l we'll have 0.9111 l more of burned fuel. I was filling up after 1087km so it will give 0.08l/100km more
So FE wouldn't be 3.85l/100km but 3.93 And as you can see I wasn't coasting too much with this tank, just 8%.
Counting that by the factor of miles traveled over a year it will give you few galons of saved fuel. Every bit counts as they say ;-)

In MPG (Imp) difference will be from 73.37 to 71.88

alas, the traffic I drive in does not allow ME to feel comfortable with having the engine off- Arragonis will confirm that traffic on the m8 is haphazard at best.

It may work for others, in different environs, but not for me

instead I opt for the 55mph approach.. The shift from Petrol to Diesel offers me significant cost savings and better resource conservation, without having to go to every last extreme

I totally understand you. I live in a very strange from the driver point of view country. So I know how it is to be afraid of turning off the engine. So I'm using my kill switch mostky when I'm coasting down to a red lights or similar situations. But I can see the benefits of killing the engine. So I'm using that as often as it's safe.

It might be about engine-braking, preventing the brakes to overheat.
