To me, the advantage would be the fact that a small, simple, mechanical injection diesel would be reliable and run on nearly anything ...

- Waste Veggie Oil or any other "biodiesel"
- Home Heating oil
- Used Motor Oil
- Jet fuel

The list goes on.

It seems our friends from across the pond have a high availability of small diesel engines. About a decade ago it was easy to go to almost any hardware store and buy a generator, air compressor, welder, etc that was diesel powered. It seemed with the ultra low sulfur diesel fuel those all dried up except for some small tractors and farm equipment. Its one thing to buy a generator for 500 bucks just for the diesel engine, its another to pay 15 grand for a small tractor for the engine.

600ccs? Sounds like the 19 hp kohler engine from my lawnmower would be a good fit.

Folks, there is a Smart ForTwo with a 700cc diesel set up for a rear drive already. But, I think that Ben is still working on saving the battery cells.

The thought of putting a diesel into an iMiev makes me shudder.

What a nice thread!!!
My advise to you for cleaning those circuit boards as i clean and restore a lot of sound equipment that is full of whiskey-cola, tequila , beer and water all that mixed with tar from cigarette smoke (grouse) :
Make a mix of water with regular soap , place the boards inside scrab them with a toothbrush (you did that) then after you dry it out take a contact cleaner spray (Philips i prefer) and cover the circuit board with it and let it be it can remove all rust and salt and it wont damage anything ALSO buy a whole lot of it as you will need to spray all plugs with it to make them live forever. I tell you i've fixed many electronics that were submerged and saved a lot of car sensors that were covered with rust,salt,water,oil...

Even if you can't save a lot you still have a lot of fun doing this restoration!
Way to go man keep it up

Has anyone ever hypermiled a diesel to break 100mpg? Ive seen jetter owners claim 50,60,70 mpg, but it seems the Geo and Honda are the top 2 for breaking triple digits.

LOL there was a company here in the Netherlands that even put a Smart turbodiesel in an offroad motorbike. I believe they shipped the majority to the US and Canada before going bust.

But still, to me it would be a shame to convert such a nice EV to some fuelburner, whatever the type. IMHO it would still be nicest if the batterypack could be used to house batteries and a BMS again. If the rest of the car is still good to go, of course. Those batteries look like you could fit standard batteries in as well...

No boattails or any big mod, best tank 104 mpg

Think about it: why do those big rigs run on diesel?

I am glad to see one guy in another country managed that. I know a guy in Richmond, several guys with several cars that can break 100 mpg with a gasser.
