Not sure if making ethanol out of coal could actually make sense, considering Sasol in South Africa still makes gasoline and Diesel fuel out of coal.

The chemists at I.G. Farbenindustrie AG, in Germany, found that they could make anything out of 'coal tar'.
'Aspirin', AGFA photographic film, 'Heroin', buna synthetic rubber, 'LEUNA synthetic gasoline.,' etc.. It came down to a matter of 'cost'.
