Coal power

Just a little discouragement or encouragement.

https://www.wsj.com/amp/articles/ger...ble-1539163800

They had 3 options.
Use less power, a lot less.
Keep their nuclear plants going
Burn more coal.

But fear and ignorance won.
They installed something to the tune of 10Gw of coal fired generating capacity in the last 5 years.
So much for saving the world.

Iowa's only nuclear plant is being shut down early. Dumbest move every. Duane Arnold plant. Utility is paying to get out of contract early, only to get in with wind energy contract with same company I think our of Florida.

Maybe some one will buy it.
Trump signed an EO to encourage the development and retention of "strategic energy plants" power plants that can run for some while being cut off from refueling.
Power plants such as hydro, coal and nuclear.

I have once visited a coal-fired powerplant. At least the heavy ashes were collected and sent to a neighboring cement factory. Well, even though a nuke could eventually be cleaner if the safety measures are taken strictly, in a sh*thole country like mine I'd rather not mess with nuke and resort to something more conventional instead.

Duane Arnold Plant is licensed to 2034, Alliant Energy had a contract with them (Nextera - 70% owner) to buy 70% of their till then to 2025. But are buying out of it early (110 million) and Nextera is shutting the plant down in 2020. Alliant has a new deal with Nextera to buy wind power. Coal is Alliant main standby energy source in the 4 plants of theirs that I have been in.

Duane Arnold is like a hospital by comparison with a maximum security prison/military prison camp feel.

I had a job interview at a coal plant in Alabama owned by Southern Company. On the tour they bragged about sending the maximum amount of pollution allowed by law up the stacks. (It was an example of their keen business sense and responsibility to rate payers.)

No one's paying them to send up less.

All costs are passed down to the end consumer.

You forgot the other option they are pursuing - renewables. Renewables are by far the fastest growing segment of Germany energy production and currently stand at 33% of total production.

Yeah Germany is doing so well the only country beating them in the area of increased CO2 production is china.
