This could work, what about a smaller/older engine with less output? It only needs to push my truck at 45 max.

Plenty of room in the trunk on this one !

Mmm one thousand horsepower on your rear axle. Ill take two for my new awd crx plans! Sorry guys, but to hell with mpgs when im sure I could do the quarter in 2.8 seconds in my now 1500 pound 4wd crx. I knew there was a reason I kept calling them the rocket cars..

Great read btw, that guy can write!

Okay so I did some digging and came up with some numbers, for my truck to accelerate to 45mph it requires about 315 LbFt TQ at 1900 rpm or about 170 hp, to maintain this speed about 280 LbFt TQ at 1370 rpm or about 145 hp is needed. This would mean that in order to even maintain my 45mph speed I would essentially need my friend's 1.5L civic engine at more than its max power to keep my truck moving......or did I get this totally wrong? (I used a stock 5.9 magnum dyno chart plus memory of old rpms and speed readouts to try and find out how much power is needed for a given speed.....thats not wrong is it?)

Totally off sir. Im not sure how to figure t hat out but a 360 is definitely not the smallest engine that could possibly move your truck. They used to put a 3.9 i believe in the three quarter tons and was more than ample.

An average car cruises on about 7hp at moderate speeds. I could see a truck needing maybe 50hp max at cruise.

To work this out you need your hp for given speed/rpm X load. If your truck cruises at 30% load then that's about 50hp based on your figures.
