- Iran's output is falling *before* the Shah is toppled in 1979
- in 1980 Saudi Arabian output falls, maybe because of OPEC quotas.
- in 1988 Saudi Arabian output picks up to replace(?) falling Soviet output.
- USA slow and steady decrease
- China slow and steady increase

...yes, on ALL assumptions.

...and, the proverbial $64K question is "...WHY?..." is US production falling and China production rising?

• US 'running out' of oil or a 'Green-Peezed' instigated decline?
• US sale of oil assets to european companies (BP et.al.)?
• China doing more drilling or increasing production?

I'll take a stab at it, but it will be speculative at best:

The US is not running out of oil nor does it care much about Green Peace instigated initiatives. We have plenty of oil and are not going to run out anytime soon. I got marooned in Wyoming ( truck caught on fire ) and temporarily drove a pneumatic hauling sand to frac crews for a well known but "shall remain nameless" oil company. Asked the crew if we are running out of oil. They laughed at me and said no. They drill and cap, drill and cap.
Plenty of crude, not enough refineries to get more of the processed products on the market we need. Totally intentional. We haven't had new refineries built for, what, 30 years or so.

Not sure about the Euro asset sale, have to look into it to give a proper answer.

China is doing more of both to address their own demands and the demands of other markets outside their borders.

We have been seeing the manipulation of the oil markets for years and since no one truly competes against each other, and they all know each other, all that has to happen is a phone call or a meeting.

Perhaps this is an oversimplified conclusion to draw, but doesn't the simple fact that importing oil - rather than using our own resources - imply more of an environmental impact? That is, more energy is used to extract oil from the earth and then ship it overseas to the States, then it would be to drill here in the first place.

Perhaps an 'out of sight, out of mind' scenario?

Plus, the likelihood of regulations making drilling harder to do here.

Not at all. Regulations mean nothing if the enforcement of said regulations is not done. The "out of sight, out of mind" scenario belongs to the EPA and other government agencies that have been compromised by those that have money and influence. The Gulf Spill that happened recently showed that if you have enough pull, you can get away with almost anything.

When you are playing with billions of dollars, there isn't room for error and they know what they are doing.

...oil spills "...over there..." aren't the pervue of EPA.

...oil spills "...in Gulf of Mexico..." or "...off Santa Barbara..." or "...in Prince William Sound..." however are the pervue of EPA.

...it's cheaper and easier to 'farm-out' ecology to countries without EPA or Green-peeze than it is to simply "DO IT" here.

Arragonis -

If I get the time I may extrapolate the (rough but) raw numbers from each chart for an overlay of all the data.

Might want to run it out to 2010, like the production figures, too. And of course it'd also be interesting to see a chart of the top oil-consuming countries (or regions, counting the EU as one entity).
