Pretty much when they started designing their own engine instead of just buying them, or at least licensing an existing design, that was the death knell for me. Screwing around tweaking things in prototypes is fun. Real production is hard.

It's painful for me to look at Elio photos again, after years have passed. Man, I would have loved to have one. So sad.
They didn't have the right startup mindset. Even if they had, the drop in gas prices probably would have killed the project.

Arguably, they didn't design a better engine than the ancient Geo Metro they originally chose.

These extreme vehicles seem to ignore the law of diminishing returns. There are 3 people in the world that care about the difference in cost of filling a 50 MPG vehicle, and a 60 MPG vehicle. The compromises required to barely save any fuel aren't worth it to most rational people.
It would need to be fun to drive, or have some other distinguishing feature that can't be met by any alternatives.

Their catch was not the economy so much as the price as well. They had to come in under price and over mpg of the Mirage. So double the mpg for almost 1/2 the price of the otherwise price champ. I bet they would sell a million IF today you could get even a $10,000 "car" with 80 mpg. The problem is you can't build a $10,000 "car" even if it only got 30 mpg and couldn't exceed 55 mph.

Arcimoto have declare their intention to get to $10K. I expect they will get there first, at 50,000/year..

Have we discussed what kind of motorcycle you could buy for what they originally claimed they would charge?

Don't know. That was $12.9K. That's what? A quarter of a Harley?
The FUV is for cagers. The Roadster would be a closer match.
