But it's still possible to find high mpg for cheap, you just have to be very patient (and most likely willing to compromise on new-ness and such). I did eventually get my HX for relatively cheap, and it's supposed to be an excellent platform. It's just old. :P

Interesting to read that you are having this trend going too.

Before 2000 here you had ton to choose with around 100 euros, inspection done and roadworthy cars, that would last year or maybe even two.

Today, such cars seem to cost around 1000 euros, some can be found for around 500 but nothing like 10 years ago.

I think there are few reasons, eco campaigns that are really new car sales boosting, in those older good cars are crushed and not even good parts are reused.
Fuel prices have gone up, so there is higher demand for small cheap to run cars.
Then rot problem is taking care of all the simple and good cars and they add more salt to roads and plan to ban it from table (well that is what I'm afraid of at least).

Some people purchase cars just for their obsession and sell it within a short period of time at cheap rates. It is always better to research and check for any defects prior to purchase of any used cars, also make sure that these cars are available in an affordable rate. One has to even make sure the he procures all the documents properly before acquiring the car.

Just throwin this in there... The market is up right now, way up. My dad owns a car lot, Auto Stop, and he claims dealers are paying retail or close to it for almost anything. I don't know how this affects all of the little things like Junkers so to speak. Gas maybe? Dad thinks the abnormality will be over sometime soon though.. We can Only hope though right.

If the cars are good and less used, people are ready to pay for higher prices. After all buying a new one is still far off expensive then a used one.

Cash for clunkers hurt everyone there. Used cars are going WAY up in value. I was hoping to pick up a 2000-2003 Focus for <$1000 for a winter rat. The only ones I can find are ones that have blown engines or other major faults.

When I went to buy a used car a few years ago, I couldn't find one with UNDER 50,000 miles and 3 years for LESS THAN $15K. So, I went to a ford dealer and got a new one for $12000 ...
