@metrompg, that is a Semtech portable emissions tester used for the measurement of CO, CO2, NO, NO2, THC, NMHC, CH4, NH3, O2 and Particulate Mass. The emission tester was attached to the tailpipe, we would drive around the track doing HARD accelerations and HARD stops to simulate everyday driving, fun fun except when a dump truck pulls in front of you I think that the testing people were more afraid of losing the tester.

Sounds like it was fun, but they really need to change those silly rules about weighing fuel - especially when weighing it together with the vehicle.
That's no longer silly, that's plain dumb.

No scientifically oriented person would ever weigh a small change in weight by measuring the differential between 2 massive weights - and definitely not with scales that only show 1 lbs difference - when a gallon is only about 7 lbs !

You'd get to the point where the measuring error is half the measured value.

Yes I got a black eye on the weigh in method. They showed me at 29mpg.All my data had me at 39.6mpg We had to top off for the saturday event which we got a dissapointing 36.7mpg but more realistic to what I usually get. With all the things going wrong in the real world not something I'm going to lose sleep over.

Totally agreed. I'm a bit competition oriented (and compete in other SCCA areas) so I would be incredibly frustrated if I took Friday off of work, drove up to NY, competed, and all of my results and or competitor results were essentially invalidated by crappy measurement equipment.

It seems to me a pump with an accurate auto-shutoff would be far more accurate than the current method. And for extreme classes they could simply require a fuel cell.

I am going to talk to Bob about the use of the scales. There is no reason that we couldn't all be required to meet at the filling station before and after the track event just like we did for the Saturday event. And, it would actually require less man hours. Each vehicle required measuring track and wheel base and readjusting the ramps before it could be weighed. The fill ups went pretty quickly and it was fun to hang around and watch each other to see what we all got. The first click method still leaves some room for error but if you insert the nozzle the same amount every time and go very slowly, it could be pretty accurate on most cars except the Prius'. Vehicles with FACTORY onboard computers were allowed to use those numbers even though I know that my 2001 Insight always reads a few percent high. There is no money on the line so in the end it is all in good fun.
