I purchased a tire replacement policy for a few bucks. Its Michigan so we get our share of potholes. Ouch about the spare Bob. Yes - its a lesson learned. I had an AWD jag and one sidewall was damaged so all 4 tires had to be replaced. I'm still mulling over getting my own spare. Who wants to wait for a tow-truck in the winter?

I needed my spare just last month. You you are lucky the tire did not damage your car. My tread came off. How was I supposed to fix that? The tread damaged several other components, which I replaced myself for less than $200, but I doubt new cars have much of a used car parts market.

Sure, I'd have a spare tire if I was running retreads. Those things fail all the time, and the evidence is littered all over our highways.

That said, I watch for road debris and steer around it. Usually something that takes a chunk out of a tire is large enough to see.

I'll never need a spare. Even if the sidewall is damaged, the chances are good that it will happen within 50 miles of a friend or family. I'm speaking as someone who has used a spare on at least a dozen occasions, and maybe more like 2 dozen. I've even driven on a donut for months at a time.

The only time I would regret not having a spare is if I suffered sidewall damage up a long logging road in the winter with no cell service. At that level of improbability, I might as well carry around a small arsenal just in case the Russians invade.

Filled up last night. The display showed 72mpg with 680 miles over 19 days. 9.7 gal which calculates to a little better than 70mpg. It's odd when the gas decides to kick in but I'm still getting the hang of it after 30 years of gas.

I think so. I have a VW Passat TDI. Looking at the fuelly reports for that car, the middle of the pack is about 40mpg, and my combined (highway-heavy) lifetime mpg is 49, near the top of the distribution. Looking at fuelly's Ioniq numbers, the middle of the pack is around 53, and with my driving style and situation I can expect about 61, if I'm again near the top. Given that most Ioniqs seem to be the 55mpg version rather than the 59mpg one ("Blue"?) it looks like they are not far off. I wouldn't mind a 12 mpg increase over my Passat, one of the reasons I am interested in this car.

Of course this assumes the Ioniq drivers are not lying more than the Passat drivers. :-)

Also, I realize I'm not answering your question, but applying it to what I know, the Passat.

Though I'm not so favorable to the "space-saver" spare tyre, it's better than nothing. What sounds pointless to me is that some SUVs are now using this type of spare instead of a full-size, even though nowadays they're mostly used as some sort of "glorified minivan".

What kind of MPGs have people been getting real world? My wife's 2016 Prius three has averaged 58.6 real world MPG so far over the first 16,000 miles of its life.

I only manage 50 MPG in the 2012 Gen III Prius, but there is evidence that wheel alignment isn't right, and I assume the cheap tires that I bought it with are not very efficient. Since it's a plug in, I average what you see below my avatar, in the 70s.
