I dunno. Call me a conservative old fuddy duddy, but since I'm not an expert, I look to the experts to show me what to do.

And I can't find any examples of super-high efficiency, low Cd vehicles with ricer-scale, befinned diffusers on them!

EDIT: wait a sec ... Fog of memory is parting... I think someone's going to post a pic of a solar car that has 'em.

jime57 -- I had one design, pace Colani, that had two fences on the outside, spring-loaded and with skateboard wheels in the tips.

Lately, I lean toward titanium skids.

I tend to agree with you overall observations. I was just kicking the idea around.

Formula 1 cars have been productively using various diffuser fins for several years now, but I'm not sure that the 150-175 MPH difference in speed makes that comparison relevant.

And, yes I remember seeing that solar car. As I recall, the fins were small and at the very rear.

Yet...

My point would be that boattails have ricer-scale plates (w/ plan taper) without the fences, so why not add them? It looks like the fences fan out to pull air out into the wake of the rear tires.

...oh, and

Oh - when I saw that Lotus pic, the thing that I was (unclearly) reacting to was the plethora of fins/strakes. The outside "fences" (a.k.a. rear wheel boat tailing) definitely make sense, and there's lots of precedence for those on high-efficiency cars & prototypes.

I bet adding those would probably help the U.F.O.'s aero, and if doing so means the underside of the tail then technically becomes a diffuser (if un-befinned), so be it!
