Agreed... people I know tend to just deal with whatever mpg their vehicle gets(normally a big truck or SUV) and not change their habits... even those with compact cars are content getting 26-28mpg... they always poke fun at me but I’ve got the lowest fuel consumption on my shift, by a pretty wide margin...

Someone on here shared a story of some silly girl bragging to her friend about her 36 MPG Prius. Then she asked the member what his Gen1 "Piece of trash" Insight got.

Hilarity ensued.

I understand completely, my Fit sucks. It just can't waste gas like my friends' cars can.

People have started asking me now what I've done to my car with its ecomods...they show a whole new level of respect when I tell them how it improves aero, and how I basically pay $1.90-$2 per gallon of gas instead of $3 or like every 3rd or 4th tank being free.

To be fair, some cars are stubborn. I owned a 2007 Subaru Outback automatic (in 2009 I believe). I drove it normally just to get used to the car and get a baseline MPG. Then I tried hypermiling techniques and it barely changed anything. 24 MPG. I could get up to 32 MPG (average of 28) in my 1996 Legacy, so I sold the Outback a month later and made a grand in the process.

I drove my Forester for a year and averaged 27 MPG on a car rated 24 highway.

I did once get 40 MPG on 165 miles.

It was mostly downhill.

the floodgates open

This morning, there were 7 (seven!) mainstream news items from all over Canada about recent high gas prices, eg:

Last week Cars.com posted a piece addressing rising gas prices and how much it costs to drive America's most efficient non-EV/non-hybrid car:

Quote:
With gas prices climbing across the country, penny-pinching shoppers might want to consider a low-priced, economical small car like the 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage GT. The Mirage GT hatchback, brethren of the Mirage G4 sedan, carries with it some surprising features for its price — and has the gas mileage to back it up.

(Although why they focus on the top-spec GT is a mystery. If you're pinching pennies, that's definitely not the one to get.)

I bet we're going to start seeing a lot of "Top 10 most fuel efficient new cars" articles in the near future.

I looked at the first 100 results of "Insight Prius gas station MPG" and sadly, did not find the story, and it does not show more than a hundred results.
