Your right, in that sealed system any vapors that travel through the filter get the opportunity to be burned in the engine. Like mentioned fluid can be drained and recycled or disposed of in some other responsible manner. Mine is also sealed like the above setup, except I empty the liquid oil into my crankcase after it is filtered through Terry cloth.

I don't put anything from the catch can back into the engine, I just recycle it. It's not just oil, but a mixture of whatever crap shows up in the crankcase, unburned fuel, cylinder blow by, water vapor etc. It's mostly oil but I wouldn't try to lubricate an engine with it.

I'm not too worried. I run higher than normal temps in my TDI(205-209 F) so the water will be vaporized and flow through the CCV into the intake. Also, from what I can see the oil collected is very clean, and I strain it to make sure. remember were only talking about a little over 1 ounce per 10K miles.

A lot of cars that have an oil separator do drain it back into the oil pan. Any unburned fuel and water get boiled off when your engine is at its proper operating temp. So dumping it back into the crankcase does no harm.

Not pointless in my case-it keeps oil from accumulating in my lower intercooler which if it accumulates too much can be sucked into the engine causing runaway or hydrolock. I love my setup, it lets me know the general health of the engine/turbo combo, and never leaves me guessing if my lower intercooler has oil accumulation!

I was noticing that my TPS was only going to 20% closed via my Torque app on my 1999 Ford Escort Wagon
That got me started in on wanting to calibrate it. I found that the TPS was sending 1.5V to the ECU so I did the waller out the screw hole mod and got it set at .96 .

I had to remove my throttle body to get to it to get the TPS screws loose and found that the pcv gunk had totally painted the butterfly with a thick coat of lacquered oil.

Just think about what that mess does to the top shoulders of your intake valves.

That right there was enough to decide to immediately install a catch can.

I had one on a 2003 Saturn that caught a lot of crap.

Anywho. after setting the TPS to read .96 on closed throttle my idle smoothed out to kitten purring levels and my throttle response and hill climbing is like a whole different car WOW!

It must have been running as rich as the ecu could possibly let it and I bet the shift points were off too.
I am looking for some huge mpg gains now.

I made a homemade one out of a aluminum water bottle that I didn't like to drink out of. After 373,000 miles the engine in my accord is so tired I get about 12 ounces in 3000 miles. bonus top off oil.
