Yes, 914 EV conversions are relatively common... but haven't yet seen a "modern" Porsche (one that's not ~40 years old, in any case) done. This could be interesting.

I think the lack of transmission is your biggest obstacle here. The easiest thing to do would be to source the right Porche tranny and build an adapter plate from whatever engine you want to use to your Porche tranny. If you decide to use a different transmission, you are going to have all kinds of problems trying to make CV's work. Very few companies, that I'm aware of, do custom CV shaft builds, and they are very expensive.

I think this is a bigger issue than the engine size, transverse or inline, upside down or purple, before you do anything, address how you will handle the CV shafts.

There's gotta be a diesel that will put out the power is light weight and will be economical. The stock tranny rear axel was probably geared for high speed so it should be streetable. I'm looking for a boxster also because I've got 2.5 engine sitting in my garage.

CV shafts are no problem at all. You must not have built anything custom.
I've made them before on other projects.
Take one apart and you'll see they are just splined axles that can be shortened and resplined just like anything else.
