They are your seats, do as you please with them.
If any one gives you any trouble say you removed them for extra cargo space one day and hurt your back taking them out and that reinstallation appears to be the more difficult step in this cycle.
Then maybe the big strong police man or state vehicle inspector person will offer to put them back in for you (which I see happening never).

That is why I don't even stop for a second in that state if I can help it.

In theory, there's nothing wrong about removing the rear seat. Eventually, you could try to retitle it as a cargo vehicle just to ensure that you wouldn't get in trouble.

Easy there. The laws are generally knee jerk reactions to idiots with political pull. Like the idiot trooper here that decided to be a cowboy and wouldn't fall back and use his radio instead. luckily he only killed himself. They blamed the guy he was chasing having nitrous, so no more nitrous. Btw, couldn't find any statute on the subject so long as you don't put anyone back there of course.

Disagree. It's always about the money. The idiots are just a distraction.

Everybody is offering opinions, which is provocative and stimulating, but so far nobody has actually looked up the rules for NJ State Inspection of vehicles and quoted whatever section of their regulations might apply or not.
Without reference to those rules, we may be just stirring a pot for the sake of fomenting argument. That may be fun and exciting, but it's not informative. Nor is it factual.

I do not see where you've found/quoted any of the rules or regs.

I don't live in New Jersey. It's not my problem.
Why don't you look it up, Frank? (As I know you don't live in Jersey either...)

I did via Westlaw. Nothing to quote, because there's nothing there.
And money generally equals political power, so same thing essentially.

hmm, looks like the mechanical inspection in new jersey has been repealed, just smog check. Go for it. (It used to be pretty tyrannical)
