I have used a full grille block on my truck, and it helped tremendously with warm up time. I have been too busy to complete my louver set, but now I will have time to "get all over it".
Thanks for the thread and inspiration.

Here are a couple of links to real shutters. They are made to be mounted on radiators, but one could mount them into a custom grill.

I would use 12v linear actuators if I was installing these on a car or other small vehicle.

They need to be lubed every 20k miles. Not really practical for heavy duty trucks as a active grill. So you won't find one of these in our next-generation Class 8 rig. But we will have our own active grill.

The signal to open or close the mechanism could be temperature controlled to trigger at a certain temperature .

It seems as though an easy way to do this would be to just wire into the power source for the electric fan. As the engine temperature rises and kicks on the fan, this would also send the signal that opens the shutters .
I was thinking along the same lines. I've got a set of blinds from one of our windows (previous owner's cats shredded the cords), and thought I'd fab a couple of end brackets, get some piano wire to serve as pivots and use a cabin mounted switch to a servo motor to flip the blinds.

I'm even thinking one step further, and fabbing a modified grill. It will have to protrude a bit, so when the blinds flip, they form an angled surface (maybe 60* from horizontal) to guide the air over the hood better.

Thin plastic or metal window blind slats wouldn't be strong enough for the air pressure from a moving vehicle.

A classic grille shutter application. 1927 Essex Super Six boat tail speedster | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Thermally controlled so they open as the engine heats up.

Grill shutters are retro fitted on to an older vehicle.

No I don't have a way to control them.
