Shave the roof rack, dabbled in acetone 2oz per 10 gallons, good tune-up, electric fan, good 6ply tires without all terrain tread, mobil1 EP synthetic, clean the throttle body (they stick) and pick up a scangauge.

Perform a full cooling system flush and make sure you get all the dexcool out. What happens is the crappy coolant turns to gel and slows down the cooling of the engine. What the PCM does in response to increased engine temps (gauge never sees) is dump in more fuel to cool the engine. Go with a quality thermostat with the factory temp rating.

I don't hate them, like any tool in the toolbox, they have their place.

If it were me, I'd reduce the insurance and drive it less. If that isn't an option, carpool with it. Even if you SUV gets a meager 12-15mpg, add three more passengers and you've taken possibly three other cars off the road, for huge net fuel savings. With 4 occupants and no other changes, all of the sudden your all-weather SUV nets 48mpg!

The cost of the above mods could buy you a civic. Heck, the cost of a new set of low rolling resistance truck tires could buy you a civic. Heck, the junkyard scrap cost of that thing could buy you a civic. Part it out, buy another civic! If the ONLY reason to own this is because it was free... dump it for a cheap little car.

A very good set of SUV truck tires cost $500 a set out the door. I looked and couldn't find a civic for $500, that could just be driven without a huge chunk of money to make it reliable (including new tires). Where do you find civics for $500? I want one now!

Craigs List, of course with the cost of fuel these cars don't last long. You will find Hondas that don't run because either the fuel pump or main relay are bad. I have seen 90s Accords for $200, put $200 in parts. $400 is a pretty cheap car.

I am a member of the Honda Acura Driver's Association, a club that is part of CASC-OR, the ontario road race organization. I see 500 dollar civics on a regular basis, and I'm sure I could find one by simply asking. A year ago, 500 dollars was the typical price for any slightly rusty fully-working pre-93 civic. I guess with gas prices, these old beaters are getting fixed up more. You just need to catch them when they are there, because they won't be there long.

Here some and parts are cheap at a U Pull yards. Plus you can download factory honda manuals online for free. It doesn't get more simple than that.
