That would be the way, with four electric screw jacks to raise and lower it.

pick of RTT

Here's a quik shot of my RTT setup:

This is the "improved" version that has a cover to reduce air circulation below the tent & behind the cab.

When we get where we're going, I take the canvas off (no it doesn't flap too bad). Then I take the grey cover off. The tent has two parts that fold out, forward and backward.

Are these single-cab pickups? Could you make a cab-top panel that hinges 6-8" ahead of the windshield header on a sun visor; that folds 'flat' against the roof? Or is that necessary?
The link I posted earlier shows good photos. I have no photos of mine on my rig. (yet) I ended up getting a van(Burgundy one) instead of a truck. I have some work to do before the van roof can be reliable holding the extra load.
Now I am thinking about a fiberglass roof like in the picture(Gray) added to my roof rack to streamline the air flow. Would take some modifying but its just time and money right? I would cut out a square for the tent.

Sorry for the delay I must have missed a notification, thought the thread died.
I will post up as I go. Thanks for the replys!

Is the ladder about four feet from the hinge-line? I'd have it open forward over the windshield and have the ladder land on the front bumper. That way you can keep both sides sleek and have the longest possible taper on the rear.

This is a very neat implementation of a tent install. Not a truck but it is a good example of thinking out of the box.

8ft-6in Telescoping Aluminum Ladder. This could be something to consider, lots more work on the roof rack mods but would make hauling the kayaks and the RTT doable. Hmmm?

Not sure how or if this could help in my case but very cool and if nothing else thought provoking (the best part of forums)

Freebeard, are you referring to my set-up (the blue 'Yota) ?

If so, the tent is the smallest one offered by Tepui. It was designed to open sideways, using the ladder to support one side and some retractable bars for the other side.

Because our ladder rack has those side supports, we decided to have the tent open forward & backward. One side opens forward and rests on the front bar of the ladder rack for support. The other side opens to the rear & the ladder is mostly un-extended into the truck's bed.

I suppose it could be moved a bit more forward, but it should still rely on support from the ladder rack when it unfolds. There may be a way to make some short supports that could use the truck's cab...

This set-up allows us a lot of space for camping stuff, a few totes of biodiesel, & two big dogs in the bed of the truck.

Still in thinking mode. Centering Roof Top Tent would allow fairing front and rear of tent as well as hang kayaks off bumper mount post. (when used)
All this will require custom roof rack and such. Fun part!

Ideas?

Kayaks plural? Are they as long as the vehicle?

Which way would the tent open up? Would it open with the kayaks in place?

10' kayak (2) I will use the tent w/o kayaks most often. That's the plan. I also like the kayaks up front so I will have more options of getting them down off my taller than normal van.

Tent will likely open over the RH side.
