well I was in a hurry to get to my grandsons soccer game in sept 2012 running at 60mph and 1950-75rpm on the scangauge when I sped up to 67-8mph the scangauge showed an 6-8mpg increase. I think it could have something to do with the turbo/boost ? what do you guys think. I didnt push it on the way home, I dont want to over rev it on a long run like that on a regular basis until I at least until install a fuel pressure gauge and exhaust pyro

2013 Mitsubishi Mirage speed / fuel economy - 1.2L, 5spd

EM member niky was kind enough to gather some readings for us recently while reviewing/testing a new Mitsubishi Mirage:

This car would give my "stock" 1998 Pontiac Firefly (Geo Metro) a run for its money, getting slightly worse mileage below 80 km/h, but better mileage above.

These results are from a car not yet broken in (2k km/1200 mi. on the clock), with the tires set at spec in the low-30 PSI range, and the A/C running. (My Firefly doesn't even have A/C!) On the other hand, balance that against the fact the numbers came from the factory FE gauge -- they're often optimistic.

Still, the numbers support our guesstimate that this car will have the best (if not, then 2nd best) non-hybrid mileage when it arrives in Canada & the U.S. this fall.

More detailed info about the car and the test, here: Speed vs. mileage/fuel economy chart - Mirage 1.2L 5-spd

Wow those are some seriously impressive numbers. As soon as I do an MPGuino I'd love to do speed vs. MPG with the VX. I'm actually quite surprised to see the peak MPG of the mirage come in so low, personally I would have expected it to be higher, more like the 40 mph range.

I don't know any of technical details of the car, but I can't imagine that at only 40 km/h it's already got the converter locked in a higher gear? Maybe I'm wrong though, it's happened once or twice before

EDIT: Nevermind, I just realized that is a 5 speed car, manual (?). At 1200 rpms I can definitely believe the economy.

Your VX will still kick this car's behind.

And right you are: 5-speed manual in this one. No torque converter on the optional automatic: it's a CVT.

I wonder how the VX would compare, 81.5 is certainly setting the bar pretty high, but I guess for instant economy yeah it might still top that.

As for the Mirage, even the CVT's should fare pretty well. It's nice to see an inexpensive, high MPG on the way. I'm actually very impressed with it's performance so far.

I normally fill up before taking a 250 mile consistent travel I had to do for years with a 1999 Saturn SL and running 75-77mph I would get a consistent 35-36mpg despite a few minor hills on that trip. At 55mph it's more like 40-42mpg.

2000neon I would love to see your numbers when you get a MPGuino so I can compare with another vx owners.
I have tested my vx many times in the last 4 years and I get 63-64 mpg at 55mph and 58-59 mpg at 60 mph. Only once did I get 60 @ 60 ( A-B-A) but it was on a very warm day ( 34 degrees C ) Sorry I never tested speeds lower than 55mph but I will when summer returns as I only drive the vx for my long commute in the summer.

Dead flat road / no wind / 60-70 F / A-B-A / 3 mile runs / 55 psi / 80% grill block

With a 3.2L Acura TL i used to get better mileage driving at 45mph vs 40mph. This was because i could upshift the automatic tranny to 5th gear at 45mph. The TCU doesn't allow 5th gear below 45mph. This let me cruise at 900-1000rpm achieving 40-45mpg whereas at 40mph i was cruising at 1750rpm and getting 35-40mpg.

So it depends on transmission/gearing and engine/torque.

I don't have any long flat stretches of road around here to do a precise speed vs. mpg test for the Aerocivic, but on 200+ mile round trips (Clinton,SC to Bishopville, SC) on the interstate I'm averaging mid 70's mpg on 70 to 75mph trips and low 60's mpg on 80mph trips. Both trips were run at 500 to 150 feet elevation with temps mostly in the 60's F. At 2000 feet elevation with temps in the 80's F at 65mph I average mid 80's mpg on the 35 mile stretch of I-26/US25 between Asheville, NC and the NC/SC state line.
