Wouldn't it be great if the EPA did it's figures via a Speed vs. MPG chart?
They could have two lines:
1.) would be curb weight with an 180 lb. driver and bare minimum accessory load
2.) would be max load with maximum accessory load

So with speed limits raising to 70- 80 in many states, what cars are most effiecent at those speeds. I hear rumors of some areas of Texas considering 85 mph speed limits. So what car (in stock form) is the most efficent going 80 mph and what is its mpg at that that speed?

Answer: None of the above. My wife's AT 2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS has an EPA highway 40 mpg estimate. I routinely get 45 mpg on highway trips driving 55-60 mph. I got 28-29 mpg driving 80 mph.

...a quick-n-dirty "rule-of-thumb" is that MPG is roughly a CONSTANT divided by MPH. For some vehicles and people the constant is a BIG number, for other people and different vehicles it's a smaller number.

I did not say it needed to be similar to their EPA, just wondering what car is the most efficient going 80 mph? There obviously IS an answer. I never said had to be an efficient answer, just the most efficient of the bunch of inefficient tests at 80 mph.

Bit of a gold mine here from Motor Trend, posted in June:
40 MPG Compact Sedan Comparison
Chevy Cruze Eco vs. Ford Focus SFE vs. Honda Civic HF vs. Hyundai Elantra GLS vs. Mazda3 vs. VW Jetta TDI
From: 40 MPG Compact Sedan Comparison - Chevy Cruze Eco vs. Ford Focus SFE vs. Honda Civic HF vs. Hyundai Elantra GLS vs. Mazda3 vs. VW Jetta TDI - Motor Trend
They even mentioned ecomodding, in an indirect way:
Quote:
Even when gas was cheap, there were guys who'd corner you at parties and talk your ear off about how their HF, with cardboard spats taped over their rear wheel housings, once got 67 mpg on a midnight drive down the Extraterrestrial Highway. Under a full moon.
