Myself, if needed a replacement, I'd go 2014+ Mirage.

I didn't even realize the Cobalt XFE that is interesting!

Any manual(non SS) 09-10 is a XFE, same tranny/final gearing. Not sure if they put manuals in HHR's(non SS) but would suspect same tranny plus Flex Fuel if that matters. E85 price spread right now sucks, but may change in the future. Pontiac G5 is the same car.
EDIT: They did put manuals in HHR, but 30 mpg HWY is quite a bit behind the Cobalt XFE 37 hwy. 09-10 HHR's had 3 engine options, 2.2, 2.4 & 2.0 turbo.

My wife has a 2007 Fit manual. She averages around 45mpg in summer. It's up to around 230k miles and I have no reason to believe it won't go for another 230k, it's so mechanically sound. Highly recommended.

Can't go wrong with a <$1000 1990s Civic, kinda slow and unsafe compared to modern vehicles, but mine has 180K miles without any major problems. Original Engine, Trans, Clutch, power window motor, AC compressor , Starts on the first crank and has plenty of power. She can still do 85MPH on the highways even after 24 years.

If you're in Illinois, deep in the rustbelt, anything for $2,000 is likely a rustbucket. Either browse ads from the southern states or up your budget. If you can bump it up to $3K, I have this Jetta TDI I drove down to Florida a few weeks ago getting over 65 mpg: https://sites.google.com/site/atikov...ta-tdi-5-speed I'll drive it back up north in the fall.

I can promise you the mileage is pretty terrible in an HHR. I like them, but don’t expect much better than EPA. 27ish was all I could muster in a rental I had for my wedding in Florida between Orlando and Cocoa Beach. It was an auto, or course, but shouldn’t matter much on the highway. It was probably also hurt by the fact that it was brand spanking new: I still remember 7 miles on the odometer when we picked it up.
Still kinda cool cars though. I tried to pick one up last time I was car shopping, but oh boy was it a dud.
