There's the Solana Generating Station.
It works but it has issues, both environmental and reliability wise.

Solana is concentrated solar to molten salt to electricity.As generation. Not electricity to molten salt to electricity as storage for solar PV or wind.

I see no reason why that couldn't be scaled up, if needed.
It reveals a big problem with these kind of systems (actually the same as with stirling engines, Seebeck elements etc): how to keep the cool end of the thermal generator cool... They use quite a lot of water.

If you are starting with concentrated sunlight, you are happy with whatever electrical energy you can get out of it through the steam turbines. If you are starting with electricity from solar PV or wind to begin with that already underwent it's challenges to become electricity, and are trying to store some of it over night, 30% round trip efficiency into the salt and out through the steam turbines isn't very useful.

Concentrated solar not the best idea for some where known for wild fires.
Plus a molten salt system sounds really expensive.
I'm trying to do grid tie solar for around $1 a watt.
I like doing stuff my way, cheap but over built.

So you are not talking about storing solar pv or wind electricity? What heat to electricity? What are you storing with this molten salt?

I have seen reports of molten salt energy storage for GenIV nuclear where by it could send 0% electricity to the grid during peak solar hours and 200% all night long.

How about a pumped storage system that uses an hydraulic ram to leverage tidal forces?

I was talking about something that I could put in my garage back yard or shed to provide some heat after the sun goes down.
You know so I don't have to burn as much coal.
