The 0.236 C(d)... Dodge?
AllPar.com: Dodge-PPG M4S Pace Car Designer Bob Ackerman Talks About His "Baby"
Quote:
The M4S's design enabled it to achieve a co-efficient of drag (Cd) of 0.236. "That was very good at the time for an actual running car with big wide tires," Bob notes. "It's extremely good. The Cd for a new Corvette is 0.34. Most sedans are around 0.35, or even 0.37. So when you get down below 0.3 you're in pretty good territory. There have been some Ford and GM cars below 0.2. But they have little narrow tires. They are not your average street car or race car by a long shot. You can do things just to achieve low figures, but if it's not in the real world, what does it mean? The ground effects material, the black rubber skirt on the front and sides, helped to reduce air coming under the car. The engineers were skeptical about the skirt but it brought down our Cd and really made the aero sing!

Why the hell could they not mass-produce this car back then?

why the .................
Low drag is not a priority yet.
There are 261,000,000 high drag, light passenger vehicles on US roads to prove it.
When it becomes a priority things will change.
Perhaps by 2025 we'll see something, unless the CAFE standards are rescinded.
In the meantime,US entropyphiliacs prefer to import 4,700,000 barrels of foreign oil per day.

^ Those Chrysler concept hybrids might just be my favourite modern cars from the company. Love the looks.

Ha, The car in the original post is the star of the movie "The Wraith", with Charlie Sheen. Many other old Chryslers had supporting roles too.

That's the Charlie Sheen movie, The Wraith.
I saw one of the M4S cars at the Chrysler Museum a couple months ago before it closed. Some details:
Exhaust:
Front wheel arch trailing edge:
Front airdam with center cutout:
Backlight and spoiler:
Radiator vent:
