If you can make hooch, you can make ethanol. While stills are illegal, they aren't difficult to operate. I suppose the difficulty might come from using unorthodox source material.
You can also create methane by building a
biogas digester. Essentially, organic waste (feces, food scraps, lawn clippings) is placed into a large container devoid of oxygen. Anaerobic bacteria decompose the material and produce CH4 and CO2 as byproducts.
The easiest solution would be to install a solar array on trackers and build an electric car. Solar panels are much more efficient than photosynthesizing plants. Just from brainstorming, a 1/2 acre in a semiarid environment should be all the land anyone needs to live a completely sustainable and modern life. Natural gas, electricity, water, and food can all be generated in sufficient quantities at home.
