1252 MPG via UltraGauge* (screen glitch)

So I was driving home from work the other day and was coasting in my 2003 Jetta (178K miles on it) and looked down and saw my ScanGuage was over 1k instant MPG. Oh the Joy. I have often noticed while coasting the readout is over 100 instant MPG, but this was new territory. Pushing the gas pedal down I saw the 1 was stuck on in the thousandths column-it eventually disapeared. Why would they put a digit in the thousandths column anyway? Wishfull thinking...

because it can be mathematically correct as an instantaneous MPG value, depending how the unit plays with the scanner data.

1252MPG at 44MPH = fuel consumption rate of 1 gallon every 28.45 hours. or in a more calculation-friendly value: .0351 GPH.

Do you key-off/key-on or anything else that may rapidly turn the ultragauge off then on?

I see this sometimes on my UG, usually only after it turns off and back on quickly

No, no, no, you have one of those conspiracy theory super mileage cars that escaped the factory. Clearly something glitched in the software and switched to the super mileage mode. Set up a deer cam and get photos of the factory tech sneaking out in the middle of the night and fixing it so it gets the same mileage as everybody else.

It happened 3 times before. The extra 1 showes up for about 30 seconds. Neat to see that if I coast i can fill all 4 digits with numbers.

Looking vainly for a down thumb button, or perhaps a Gibbs Slap button.

DO NOT encourage such behavior.
