It's never a good day for a breakdown.Hope it turns out to be something like a $2 rotor cap in the distributor.

I really dont know anything about these motors as all my experience is with older chevy stuff. Your car has a distributor? If yes, put a breaker bar on the crank pully with the distributor cap off, and try spinning the motor over with the breaker bar, going both forwards and backwards. You should be able to see the distributor rotor rotating with the engine and how much (if any) play/slack there is in the chain. If it does not turn.. Timing chain.

Take the valve cover off and look at the cam gear. You should be able to tell if the timing chain broke or not. Check yer oil and see if there's any water in there or not. Was the engine rattling before it died? If you ignored the rattling, the timing chain tensioner guide was probably bad/broken and allowed the timing chain to eat into the timing chain cover (common problem) and dumped coolant into the engine. If that was the case, you'll need to replace the cover and do a timing chain replacement along with the guides. They do make a steel enforced timing chain guide so it doesn't break off like the stock plastic one does.

Toyota engines with timing chains are interference engines.
Toyota engines with timing belts are not interference engines.

Unless you were at low idle, chances are yer valves probably contacted the pistons.

You might be better off with a 3rzfe engine swap...

Did you check with Celica forum? Engine & Drivetrain
