2000 Civic HX: Passed CA Smog test with 49state ECU installed in a CA car!

well as the title says folks! and actually, I totally did it by accident!
I was going to install my CA ECU for the test, but forgot!

So story goes I have a 100% California model 2000 Civic HX. the California ECU is different than the 49state ECU in that, the 49state ECU is much easier to get into lean burn - which you know, is pretty key. So I of course had to ditch my CA ECU!

CA ECU: P2N-L32
49state ECU: P2N-A32

So after much research and exploration and a thread or two, I found a 49state ECU, bought that puppy up and installed it. Sure enough, it worked as people had said it would! But I was afraid to run it thru a California Smog test. I just figured I'd swap back in the CA ECU for the test, just to be safe.

Turns out, you can keep your 49state ECU in your car, for a California Smog test

I remember a customer who had a 76 Federal 280Z, no cat, no egr, cal versions had both. The car burned a quart of oil in 600 miles on a fresh change to boot. The customer was in the military andwas transferring to a base in cali.

I advised him to sell the car, he took it across country.

To my utter amazement he called me and told me it had passed. We had tuned it and adjusted the spring flap K-jetronic type air flow meter to make it run as lean as practical, but I could not believe it waould pass without a cat or egr.

regards
Mech
