That was after 13 years and 160k miles, so it's probably pretty typical of filters that have never been changed in these cars.

I pounded out the ball joints last night. I'll probably pick those up locally tonight and install the new ones this weekend.
The shop called and the head ended up having two bent exhaust valves... I'm not sure if I damaged it while removing it or what. That delays things, but I should be able to pick it up tomorrow.

My only thought is that I left the cam in the head. Some of the valves were partially open. If I set it on a hard object it may have bent the valves?

How badly bent did they say they were? How many?

They didn't say how bad it was, but it was 2 exhaust valves.

It's around 1,000 for a valve job isn't it? I remember both my parents cars timing belt broke and it cost them 1k a piece to fix because it bent valves.

The head is already at the shop. Taking the head off and reinstalling it are the major costs. The cost to me is ~$10 per valve.

I wonder if the PO ever drove through a puddle and sucked up some water?? What would you have set the head on to bend the valves? But, $20 to fix two valves isn't bad.
