2010 Insight?

I noticed what seemed like an unusually large number of 2010 Insights for sale on Craigslist by car dealers, and the prices didn't seem too bad. What is the scoop on that vintage? A good year, or ???

I'm under the impression that the new Insight typically doesn't pull the same numbers as the Prius. I haven't heard anything negative about them, but you might be better served taking your money to a Toyota dealership - unless the price is right.

I drove a new gen Insight and it is a nice car but can't quite match the numbers of the Prius. The CVT trans and engine noise were a bit unrefined also. If they are 25% cheaper than a Prius, it would be a good deal.

Not quite the mpg numbers of the Prius but not bad -(I'm getting 46.8 in winter driving with no mods. Can't wait for the warmer weather to see what it's really capable of now that I'm better at driving it efficiently.

So, for a few more mpg, you get to pay approximately an extra $5000 for the base Prius (without cruise control) - at least that was the number when I was in the market for a new car a little over a year ago.

If you are an ecomodder, you can ignore the EPA numbers on the Insight. I average 50 MPG each week, and I could probably get more if I didn't carpool. The insight was rated #2 as best MPG for the money, but they compared it to the base model Prius, which nobody buys. The base model Insight has power windows and locks, and the only thing I would add to it would be cruise control.

The 2010 Insight has a really tough competitor in the Prius C. The Prius C is technologically more impressive, and has better fuel economy. Try them both.

I doubt the 2010 Insight has a competitor in the 2012(3?) Prius C because the C is a new car and the Insight isn't. The Insight will be cheaper to own than a new C. For that matter, despite slightly less impressive fuel mileage, an Insight will be a cheaper car to own most of the time than a Prius would. Too early to tell on a C versus a new Insight, but it will be close.

The Insight and Prius are definitely competitors. Why would you compare a used car to a new car? The used car is going to be the better deal almost every single time (financially). For people looking at new vehicles these two are definitely going head to head.


I do find it very interesting though looking at the Insight vs Prius ACTUAL user mileage. Though there are only 3 users reporting, the Insight owners are actually beating the Prius C owners in mileage. Its also good to see both are beating the EPA rating. It'll be interesting to see as we get more Prius C owners here how things pan out with the EcoModder crowd.

If you look at Fuelly for a larger sample size (and likely more typical numbers), you can see that the Insight can at least match the Prius C's average, but the Prius C can probably do better with any given driver.

However, if you get a 2010 Insight for $15000 and get 50MPG, vs a new Prius C for $20000 and get 60MPG, with gas at $4 a gallon, the Insight plus fuel would still put you ahead at 200,000 miles. The break even point would be about 400,000 miles, but probably less because of rising gas prices. So if you can get a cheap Insight, its a better deal as long as maintenance costs are similar. (even at $6 a gallon, the Insight is still cheaper at 200,000 miles)

I have a 2011 Insight base model, I payed around $18000 out the door for it. I consistanly get over 42mpg without trying to hyper mile. If I do indeed, hypermile, I will get mid to low 50's. The chart states the average miles per gallon is 401.00, I haven't ever got that number.. Just my Insight..lol
