2012 Chevrolet Sonic replaces Aveo
Looks like the Sonic which will be the replacement for the Aveo will get the Cruze treatment with a nice interior.
Looks to be bigger then all the other cars in it's segment so it will probably be close to Cavalier size.
The bonus is that it gets the 1.4 turbo with 138 hp which is 18 more then the Ford Fiesta and I can guess it's a good 400 lbs less then the Cruze which should give it the pep that is missing from the Cruze lineup.
Also I like some of the aero done with smaller grill opening which combined with a small efficient engine and light weight should give off 30+ mpg city and 40+ highway and hopefully a decent 0 - 60 time.
Can't wait to get some more info.
Might actualy skip out on the Cruze Eco for a next car if they get close to same mpg and I can save a few grand.

Too bad it wouldn't be closer to the 50mpg like the Metro, then it would definately be on the want list.
As to the cruze, i am hoping they make a Cruze with the voltlike drivetrain without the volt price, if the talk of that is true and the price is nice and low it would be a winner.

..to my eyes, the Spark *IS* an Aveo with new seatcovers and different drive train.

First set of pics I saw didn't make it look half bad.
Saw a second set of pics which make the Aztec look good in comparison.
We will see.
Least it's not as ugly as the front of the Prius C concept.

The Volt IS the electric Cruze. They share many of the same basic parts and the Volt is a derivative of the Cruze's architecture.
As for it's MPG, I too will not be holding my breath for a true Metro replacement. It seems that GM still doesn't get that there is a market for a real, back to basics economy car with little more than a small engine, a manual transmission, and a lightweight hatchback body. Either that or they are afraid that a $12k econobox will steal too much of the Volt's thunder if the fuel economy numbers are similar. It wouldn't be the first time that GM hobbled a low cost car to avoid hurting a halo car.

(Note: the car sees 100% city driving and is EPA rated at 37 mpg city)

Here's an update from the Detroit auto show :
Detroit auto show: Chevrolet Sonic and Buick Verano are unveiled; Volt is named car of the year - latimes.com
Quote:
Chevrolet revealed its latest small car. Going into production later this year for the 2012 model year, the Sonic will be available in sedan and hatchback versions and use the same two engine types offered for its Cruze: a turbocharged 1.4-liter with about 138 horsepower and a 1.8-liter estimated at 135 horsepower.
Designed to blend the practicality of a small car with a fun driving experience, the Sonic's suspension was tuned by Corvette engineers to give its ride and handling a sporty feel, the automaker said.
A direct competitor of the Ford Fiesta, the Sonic will offer best-in-segment cargo capacity in both the four- and five-door models, Chevrolet said, adding that it will be equipped with remote start, heated front seats and a sunroof.

I heard the Corvette engineers part on the radio today. They are hoping to surprise the critics with it's handling.

...does that imply that Corvette engineers have run "...out-of-work..." and are being shuffled out to the GM hinter-lands for reassignment?

That thought also occurred to me. I'm a thinkin' it's all hands on board, sink or swim, batten down the hatches! The Ford Fiesta has already been featured by DC Shoes' co-founder Ken Block, so (I think) it would behoove GM to beef up the Sonic :
