2017 Kia Niro Hybrid (Update: sets 76 MPG US cross-country hypermiling record)
I've been noticing promotional material and early reviews on the upcoming
Kia Niro Hybrid - its a small SUV/crossover type vehicle and sounds real promising (well, they always sound promising in marketing materials) ...
Its a bit bigger than the Honda FIT I drive now, but sounds more peppy than the Honda HRV which is similar in class.
Sorry, though I've been reading here for a year, I apparently can't post a link to it since I have not been much of a poster here before.

New Guinness world record hypermiler's Wayne Gerdes mileage better than a Honda Insight at 76.6 cross country.

Guinness record
That's an impressive number - but we need context!
Wayne hasn't posted any details yet.
Minus any additional info, I'd still put my money on an Insight beating it handily in the same conditions & at the same average speed.

Agreed. Its difficult to believe that, on the whole, there are any huge ground breaking strategies that would account for this overtake in efficiency. Its general shape is very similiar to my CX-5, but I noticed (especially in the rear) that the tires fill the wheel wells better and its lower in the back. I've gotten 42-47 on highway with my non-hybrid SUV so the EPA numbers aren't unrealistic, but 76.6 is huge! My hat's off to him. I can't even get within the same area code as he operates in hypermiling.

I could easily beat that in a stock Insight if allowed to drive at 50 across the country. Need details.
Still, very impressive. Another Korean hybrid coming to the market with impressive numbers can only be a good thing.

Voelcker irritates me with this type of sentiment coming up sometimes in his reviews:
Quote:
We also concluded that while it could be very fuel-efficient, the Niro is far more enjoyable to drive in the peppier Sport mode rather than the default Eco setting.
Using Sport mode is likely to cut real-world gas mileage to some degree—and perhaps a lot.

Well of course it is! But what's your priority?
I suspect he'd rather it came with a non-hybridized V6! And he'd rather be editor of a "non-green" car reporting site.

Beware of people & voices from "behind the curtain" who also wear false colours, ie: an ex-hot rodder posing as an eco-geek.
