And still averages almost 40mpg! That number doesn’t tell the whole story. I can say that my car gets 19mpg highway (which it can) and people would assume it’s either badly engineered or badly broken, but I only get such bad mileage when averaging 100mph, which gives the context of the mileage...

A good point. There are a number of differences between the Touring and other trims which include wheels (larger, heavier, lower profile, different rubber) and overall vehicle weight (+100lbs or so).

I expect it's mostly due to tires.
