Hi Euromodder,

yes, they say that in the booklet. I did my first 'fillup' calibration on saturday and will be able to do the first correction on the next weekend. Thx for the idea with correcting only half way-ish, this will hopefully avoid over-compensation..

Btw, ScanGauge seems to help :-) I got 4,7 and 4,9 L/100 km on my last 2 commutes to work.

The way back is another story though, lots of congestion yielding me 6,0 and 5,9 L/100 km...

so long,

tinduck

It is my average mileage for the 10k Kilometers since I bought the car.

For the (continental) European guys and girls: this equals 5.8 litres / 100 km.

Best endurance was 45,58 mpg (5,16 L/100km). These values were always calculated when refueling.

this van only is driven on highways rear trucks below 80 or 90 km/h, don't?

my best city fuel consumption with a skoda octavia tdi 110cv (cd=0.3, crr=0.85, m=1400kg), was 4.8 L/100km (below 6.4 homologated) but in
heavy traffic, driving close to 6.4 it's far better than a taxi driver. this car burns 5.7 L/100km on higways (at ctt speeds between 110-120-130, i've done several times 2000-6500 kms trips portugal, spain, france, belgium, italy, CH, poland, germany...). Full throttle on autobahn (180-200 cruise speed) burns 10.5 L/100km.
I know your van has very low consumption, and you are a good hypermilling driver but without any modifications on the van, i think it's not a representative use. Are you going alone in your van to work? an Audia A2 3L or VW Lupo would be better than a big van
My Renualt Kangoo 1.5 dci 85 cv is about 5.5 L/100km (620 kg load and 120-130, rarely 140, altought in autobahn acheived 178 km/h gps
My VW LT 35 2.8 CR tdi 158 cv 4025mm wheelbase(15 m3) is about (1250 kg load) is somewhere between 9.5-10.5, rarely driving above 120 km/h)
I heard of your van 6 to 7.5 L/100 km on normal and loaded driving.
Your homologated fuel consumption:
http://www.comerciales.volkswagen.es...s/motores.html
road is equivalent to fuel consumption around 93 km/h (long explanation needed), you can see only one is 2.0 84 cv on doing 6.0 L/100 km, at 120 km/h cruise speed (gps measured) 8-10 L/100km are expected.
I'm very happy of you doing that low consumption. Congratulations.

Hi ausias,

You are right, I usually drive behind trucks (if available) at around 90 km/h.

Nobody ever said that this is representative driving style, but hey, this is ecomodder.com

The reason I drive this big van is that we need a big car for the family. My wife drives our other car (Golf VI 1.4L gasoline) and yields around 7L/100km... If I let her drive the van, she would surely go double-digit while I can drive the Golf at about 4-5L/100km. So, it is cheaper me driving the van and her driving the Golf .

All that aside: I LIKE my T5!

so long,

Tinduck

maybe you can do more exact EPA rating calculations using my formulae (useful when you could not get from Fuel Economy )
I think you did 8.7 conversion to 27 mpg, but if 8.7 is EU homologated average the using more acurate conversion is 24.7 mpg and you are 9% better of your "x % above EPA"

[EPA highway equivalent USmpg] = (173)/ ("extraurban european f.c." L/100km )

A good and easy conversion formula between EPA or EU average fuel consumption is as follows:
EPA(usmpg)= 205.87/EU(L/100km)
EU(L/100km)= 202.04/EPA(mpg)

this method has only +- 14% error because of big differences between city homologation cycle. This error is around +-3% for EU 3.5 to 6.5 L/100 km (or EPA around 27 mpg).
EPA and EU urban/city cycle homologation are so different that there is a good aproach if you don't use more variables (engine size, axle ratio, drag, engine type...)
T5 2.0 L diesel of 2009 had the biturbo engines? how much power is yours?

Hi ausias,

in fact, the homologated rating for my version (2,0L 103kW, single VTG turbo) is 7,5 L/100 km, so I should be right on the mark with 27 mpg - actually, I used your formula to calculate this :-)

The fuel economy website did not show any T5s since this rig is not exported to the US. I cannot really understand this since it would make a fabulous opponent for Voyager etc. due to its low fuel consumption.

so long,

tinduck

I get 35mpg with my high top lwb 1997 T4 campervan, not loaded to the gunnels, at 60mph. This seems to be about 10 more than I would expect, I don't understand why I'm getting this. This is measuring top of tank to top of tank. If I take off very approximately as little as 100kg it feels a lot more spritely.

I need to calibrate the scanguage and measure with a almost empty tank.

Hi there,

first real ScanGauge calibration done, it said 5,5 L/100km for the tank, maths said 5,7 L/100km. Corrected only two thirds of the way.

In a way, this tank was tragic... I was down to 5,2 L/100 km when commuting only, but then we took off into hilly country for our autumn holiday. Always grinding up mountain roads and when you want to coast down, it is steep as hell and there's an intersection at the bottom... well. Next one will be even worse.

so long,

tinduck

Hi there,

after some modifications (upper grill block, change from summer to winter tires (235/55=>215/60) and pressure on winter tires at 3.7 atm, my mpg on my morning commute came up from about 50 mpg best case to an unbelievable 57.36 mpg (4,1 L/100km) this morning. Tailwind was about 10 km/h (if you believe what the weather service says). Um. Best commute before that was 53 mpg (4,4 L/100km), and sometimes I had stronger tailwinds... well. I am far from complaining :-)

so long,

tinduck

Competitive mileage or competitive route to & german freeway system?

Your results indicate very extreme hypermiling. I was in germany last summer and tried to draft behind a truck with a rental Smart ForTwo. Things went pretty well until the truck behind me started to squeeze me

My Experience

Just for your information, I recently rented a 2012 Diesel VW van ("Caddy" Model) from EuroCar in Ireland for 7 days of touring. As I am an American driver with no prior experience driving on the "wrong" side of the road, therefor I tended to drive very conservatively. However, with 5 passengers plus 2 pieces of luggage for each, the van got 50.13 miles per gallon on my first fillup, and 48.3 mpg on the second. I was very surprised, in view of the hilly areas of the Dingle Peninsula, Connor Pass, and the Burren of Clare we frequented.
