Good catch, Mike. I was going on the thread title, forgetting that he had also asked about the smaller trucks.
Personally, I put them in categories based on usefulness to a certain perspective of person:
Weekend Warrior, S10, Ranger, pre'04 Tacoma
Worker's Friend, Dakota, Early (very early) Ram, post'04 Tacoma, Colorado (kinda), T100
Truck - Everything larger than a Worker's Friend, but smaller than true commercial vehicles. (Sorry, Jacob.)

Is that #100 over the lowest rating for capacity of a commercial vehicle, or is that #100 over the vehicle's curb weight?

It's not about curb weight or capacity; it's about Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. A vehicle with a GVWR over 8500# is considered a "commercial" vehicle by many states, as well as by the EPA. His F-250, as mine, has a GVWR of 8600#.

That's what I meant by Capacity weight. If it's rated for #8600, that's it's "capacity" rating. You can't exceed that on a scale, or you start getting fined. You've answered my question, though.

yep.
exactly.
and the GVWR is curb weight plus capacity
although the question made me curios and I just looked it up. Apparently CA doesn't go by weight as many other states do - but either way my registration says "commercial"

From what my cousins and uncles who live in CA have told me, pickup trucks with an open bed (no tonneau cover, cap, or camper) have to be registered as "commercial" vehicles in CA. A camper, cap, or tonneau cover changes its status to "passenger vehicle". Makes perfect sense to me. NOT.

I stand corrected. Just 'cause they're family doesn't mean they're not FOS.

Only if the state DOT catches you and you don't have a good excuse. They're much more interested in the over-80K# commercial trucks.
(and the "#" sign goes after the number of pounds; not before)

I know where it goes, it's just a matter of the way I type... I count when I'm typing, and if I lose count at some point, things get messed up. Usually, symbols.
