The 5 speed rental came back - still has a clutch!
Our 5 gear Grand Am came back from it's first rental. 1800 kms were put on it, by a nice, older British couple. I swear that thing came back cleaner than when it went out! I asked him what kind of fuel economy he had gotten from it, he replied "good" but then went on to say he had tried to figure out his MPGs but got confused between U.S. and Imperial gallons. Oh well, it is already booked out for tomorrow morning, so maybe the next person will make an effort to figure out their mileage. The car had 127k kms when I bought it, I paid $2400 for it, and the first rental made us $700. I have a running bet with my business partner that the car will pay for itself before it comes back on a tow truck needing a clutch. I think if we get a run of older British couples renting it I will be a shoe-in to win!

Yup, I'll happily delete it if it's clogging up the off topic section.

The rest of the world isn't as incompetent as most Americans (and many Canadians). I'd only worry about the ability of American renters. Even then, a newbie isn't going to destroy a clutch. It will be a wannabe hot-rodder who will do that.

Would someone who's not familiar with manual transmissions go out of their way (I mean, this isn't exactly Hertz we're talking about, is it?) to rent a MT car? I'd guess it'd be people like me, who just detest automatics.

I've never had a MT available to rent anywhere in the USA. It's the opposite in the rest of the world, where MTs are the norm, and you have to make special arrangements in advance if you want an AT.

I would love to rent an MT car in the US or Canada! 10 years of renting an average of 1-2 cars/week, and all slushboxes. I guess you have to go to Vegas, Hollywood, or South Beach to rent an exotic manual car for big bucks (or find a small company in this case). The big-box companies should really offer a few to loyal customers. They sell them as "one-owner" cars after auction anyway.

i doubt any car rental company would allow one of its vehicles out of country.
