51.4 on my commute today. (2012 Honda Civic EX CVT)

I am into my third week of owning a new(2014) Honda Civic EX. I've been using it and its handy fuel economy tracking displays to improve my driving habits and see just how many MPG's I can eek out of it on my 42 mile commute. Today I was really impressed on my way to work which is a 15% city 85%hwy commute. According to the various trip displays and only using conservative driving and the DWL technique (hwy speeds between 57 and 65mph)from door to door the trip average was 51.4mpg! So far I am quite impressed by this little car!

Welcome aboard.

Are you using eco mode? Have you tried with it on and off?

Nice numbers, welcome to the site!

Any mods planned? A grill block would definitely help you out with as much highway driving as you do.

Congrats, nightrunner! And welcome to the forum.

I just did my first fill on my new-to-me '07 Civic LX 1.8 5-speed, and saw 50 mpg US.

Start a fuel log: you will want to track your actual fuel pumped vs. distance traveled, since the onboard display is likely optimistic. It's ~10% high in my parents' 2010 Civic. My '07 doesn't have a factory gauge, but the ScanGauge also read 10% high before calibrating it.

As for mods, I did 15 mostly small ones that increased my Civic's highway efficiency by 15%: http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...7-a-30111.html

This commute was done without the Eco mode. Last week I drove with Eco mode on for every commute and my best was 47.7. It's going to take some more driving before I can say if it does or doesn't make a difference.

I am planning on blocking off the grille, especially since its starting to cool off here in MI already, hopefully that will yield a slight increase. Also going to try increasing the tire pressure.

I have started a fuel log and over my 3 fill ups now the trip computer and fuel economy displays are spot on with my fill up calculations so far.

I have the auto CVT trans so I am leary about trying any more advanced hypermiling techniques such as pulse and glide. I am just concerned with the long term effects of shifting the transmission to neutral and then reengaging in drive while moving at speed. I have put it in neutral and coasted to a stop at a light or stop sign or into a parking spot. What's bringing my tank average down is taking my daughter to school in the morning. Its such a short drive the car never has a chance to reach full operating temperature. And I have to play musical cars with my wife in the morning. Backing my car out of the driveway so she can get out and head to work, then pulling back in and waiting to take my daughter to school. I do wish it were a manual, I'm sure I could do a little better but I do like the convenience of the auto and for a CVT its pretty nice. Much better than the CVT in my wife's Jeep Compass. Thanks to all the posters on this forum and all of the great information being shared.

Wow - that's unusually rare. Most factory gauges are optimistic.

Honestly, if your CVT is as aggressive as many recent ones have been at getting the engine RPM down low at cruise, I wouldn't bother trying to P&G.

But does the car have a "manual" mode? If it does, one thing you might be able to do is request a lower engine RPM sooner than the default programming.

A block heater would help.
