So do these engines have a timing belt or chain?
Thanks,

I'm rally enjoying my ScanII. After my ride to my gig last night I was running early, not very usual for me, but after 50.1 miles, it cost me $3.89 & MPG was 46.1. I only have the P0420 code that keeps popping back up. I've been only using Marathon gas w/ STP additive already in the fuel.
So do these engines use a timing belt or chain?

It's a chain... Yours is getting a little long in the tooth if it hasn't been changed yet, but if the previous owner was gentle on the car you shouldn't have to worry about it.

My sticker under the hood says that my 99 has a 1ZZ-FE.
Chain, cool & thanks for sending the illustration as well. Yea , I'm pretty sure it had any easy life in as far as not being over-revved.
Daox, how do i change my vehicles in the left column? My VX is dead & my wifes youngest sister needed a car, her trans in her Elantra blew up this weekend. So it was either my Del Sol or my wifes Prelude.
Thanks,
Dave

Code p0420:
Causes -
A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
* Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
* An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
* The engine coolant
temperature sensor is not working properly
* Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
* Retarded spark timing
* The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings
Possible Solutions -
Some suggested steps for troubleshooting a P0420 error code include:
* Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
* Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
* Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
* Replace the catalytic converter
I hope those solutions help, you may be able to clean out the cat with an additive, I can't remember how I fixed it. I know I've replaced the O2 sensors... Removing the passengers seat to change the rear one is a little tedious, but not hard - doesn't take much longer than the typical splice technique.

Hi Funny,
It appears to me that I have no leaks around the cat. When the CE is turned of by my Scan GaugeII the smell on First start-up & at idle is much improved.
Remove the rear passenger seat, for real? I have no idea where this sensor is, but I guess I'm going to find out.
Thanks again for your detailed analysis!
Dave

Ouch, sorry to hear about the tranny.
When you go to edit your car in the garage there is a Status drop down. Just set them to retired.

Thanks Daox.
Got it figured now.
My wife has been thinking about selling her Prelude ever since my VX was stolen. When we were actively looking for the car, police told us that car thieves now have master keys for Honda's. But after I got the car out of storage I took it down the road after I put a new battery in, to warm it up before I changed the oil. Near the end of the drive I thought to myself w/ only 139,000 pampered miles this car is way too tight to let go. So I volunteered my del Sol instead. The del Sol I've owned for 11 1/2 years, & the Prelude for over 15. Besides at least some young kid isn't going to hack it up. I could always buy it back, if that happens.
So I deleted my VX & del Sol & added my Corolla. If I didn't like the Toyota so much I'd be driving my Miata. Especially w/ MPG's solidly in the 40's I'm going to drive her at least till 300,000, st least that's the plan for the moment!

No, I was talking the front passengers seat. Four bolts and you lift it off alignment pins. The connector is usually stuffed under the carpet near the center console. The rear O2 sensor is right behind the Cat, the front sensor is right below the exhaust manifold close to the firewall. Piece of cake, just tedious.
