Aerodynamic Streamlining Template SolidWorks 3d Model
Here's a SolidWorks model of the Aerodynamic Streamlining Template. This is my first decent version. It's not well defined, but it is based on the AST. The front plane (profile view) is a single AST and the top plane (plan view) is two ASTs to make a teardrop shape.
The following is what I recall doing. I traced the AST outline by placing points at the percentage marks. Then I spaced them evenly in the horizontal direction, and connected the dots with straight lines. So, it's not curved. That's why there are sections that look like panels. I ended up with a 90° arc for the windshield area. I extruded a boss of the teardrop shape on the top plane and cut extruded the AST profile from the front plane to get the 3d shape (that order was necessary, versus the reverse order). I filleted the edges at the nose, the resulting shapes are what SW came up with, and it was good enough. I changed those to glass. And I added four wheels.
The overall length is 165 in, overall height is 37 in, overall width is 64 in. Tire diameter is 28 in, track width is 36 in, wheelbase is 72 in. So, these aren't refined.
I think it's pretty cool.

I've come to the conclusion that the AST yields a computer mouse.

Izzat what you wanted Frank Lee to do with his Geo Metro?
Where do you want to go with this? It looks like NURBS, can you do anything with those compared to polygons or .STL tool paths? And I'm curious about the scalloped edge on the side windows. Effect or Artifact? I like the windows overall.
Here's how I designed a similar but highly defined shape. Starting with a subdivided sphere, I stretched one hemisphere by 250%.
Then a similar operation vertically to lower the 'equator' and a flattened bottom.
Finally adrjusted the overall length/width to 2.5 or 4 to 1 fineness ratio.

Here is my take on it, in SketchUp:
The three colors are the surfaces created by extruding the three orthogonal views.

Ast
Here's what was sent up to Tom Burkland for DARKO.
All the aft-body is rounded over, combining tumblehome and edge radii as in Paul Jaray's original 1922 pumpkin seed.
Here's a rough 'thinking out loud' rendering.
An aerodynamic boat tail must have this rounding to perform to it's optimum, especially when truncated,as Morelli is telling us.

sgtlethargic -- Is what you had in mind for the thread — a show and tell? Your dimensions sound about right for the Darko wind tunnel.
NeilBlanchard -- In the sidebar for you video i found:
Automobile Streamlining: "Taking the Air" 1941 Chevrolet Division General Motors Corporation
- 1st thought: sky-writing drones
- 2nd: those aren't smoke trails, that's polarized light!
- 3rd: three foot long tufts?
- 4th: hydraulic rams on the doors FTW
- 5th: musically-empowered aviatrixes
Thanks!

Re: freebeard
"Where do you want to go with this?"
** I want to build something close to the shape, and shoot for 100 mpg, eventually.
"And I'm curious about the scalloped edge on the side windows. Effect or Artifact? I like the windows overall."
** That was a side effect. I was trying to fillet the whole roof edge.
"Here's how I designed a similar but highly defined shape."
** Cool. What software program?

Very nice. It (the color patterns) reminds me of a killer whale.

I will use this version of the AST, next, and try to get the full effect. Tumblehome is a cool word.
