Almost 41mpg!

I've owned this car for 9 years and never thought I would see this day. First off, the cancer inside the passenger's rear fender is massive, but a nice plus was a 40.97 mpg tank this week. All highway, some stiff headwinds, and some nice rolling hills to contend with. Sometimes I did P&G from 55-65 and others at 60-70.

I swapped back to my all-seasons and recalibrated the UG. I'm using the odometer on that to take out the tire variation. I'm sure I picked up a few mpg points because I was previously using the dash's odometer.

Planned mods are one more piece of the grille to block, (weld the rust holes in the floorboards), finish the bellypan, (and weld the gas filler door surround back on). Still tossing around the idea of steelies, moon hubcaps and rear wheel skirts, though I'm still a bit self-conscious about those.

I have 360 miles to central IL and back this weekend, and the wind looks like it will hold off. We'll see what happens...

I've logged two more 40+mpg tanks including a 41.7 slow-poke with the wind cooperating. I got 519 miles for 40.9 on Wednesday (533.2 for the tank-current best). Long-term P&G is tough, but I did it.

I hit 46 on an errand last night, including a 52mpg blast on the first leg. I used EOC and never went above 20% throttle or 35mph. Good grief. You 50 and 60+ folks either have more inherently efficient vehicles or are driving even smarter than me. I can't go much slower, so my hat is off to you.

EOC is still scary and I can't get over how dangerous and stupid it is, but man, the return is huge. I used to see 26/32 this time of year.

This weekend there will be 560 miles with three other people cruising at 65. I can't bring myself to subject others to my new driving style yet, so my average will take a hit.

Nicely done! IMHO, EOC gets easier with time and a whole lot less scary as you learn to expect when the pedal is going to have power braking and when it's not. I was scared to death when I first tried it, but now it seems second nature. My foot has learned to sense where the pedal engages and I now reflexively push harder when I feel the pedal resist at a higher point. I discovered this winter that my ABS works even with the engine off and no power braking left. I've also learned there are just times when it's an unsafe practice and don't do it at all.
