Alternator field disable. Modification method of difficult alternator type

Hi All,
I have recently modified my alternator to allow field disabling which stops the alternator producing electricity and reduces the load on the drive train slightly.

There are some alternators which have a signal feeding into the unit to disable the field. Mine unfortunately did not have this signal as it is fairly old. To perform the modification i opened up the alternator and interrupted the field circuit at the brushes.

For others interested i wrote up the method in the wiki, its located here
Alternator Disable Switch - EcoModder

I am not yet sure how effective this mod is for reducing fuel usage however the modification does allow manual turning on and off of the alternator charging.

Nice mod and good wright up for the wiki

The wiki has been slow of late. Most days there are no changes but the page views keep going up (8800 so far).

thanks weatherspotter

I figure that is still a win for the wiki,
I personally haven't been updating the wiki much as of late because i have put in all the information i know so far. If the page views keep going up without much activity or forum posts about the wiki that means people are finding it useful which is the main point.

maybe when i finish the list of mods on my car ill find more to put into the wiki maybe expand out the detail in the hypermilling section.

I have the same reastions why I have not added much. I keep putting it out there for people to use, and I seem to get a good response from it.

i would recomment installing a voltmeter for this one so when your car is about
to konk out you can just "enable" the alternator again. i love my car. it uses nothing in terms of electricity.

i left my lights on for 2.5 hours and it still cranked over first shot haha
