are the diesels really better then it?
As far as the numbers I've seen, yes. I'm sure most of that comes from the higher energy density and better overall efficiency of diesels.

I think it's a fine choice, and it was on my radar when I was in the market for a new (used) car. What kind of economy numbers have you been getting?

The problem with diesel is the abysmal selection in the States (VW has not been reliable or cheap to service), and the $2k premium you'll pay to drive one. It takes a lot of saved pennies to make up for such a difference in price. I hesitate to even mention this since I'm somewhat of a diesel fanboy. I bought a full-size truck just because I wanted a diesel engine and light trucks don't have a diesel offering.

the $ economy gain of diesel sedans in the US are not worth anything-

whats the point of having a car that gets 20% better efficiency than gasoline when the diesel costs 20% more than the gasoline?
the gain in your pocket is 0.
thats here in NY and NJ.

the hyundai elantra 6 speed manual is supposed to get 40 mpg but it doesn't.
you CAN expect an average of 35-38 though.

that is pretty good , cuz the rented kia rio subcompact that i am driving now is only giving 26 average (with ac on 3/4 of the time)

If you're going to go by that logic, the Cruze might actually be the best choice. Even in the auto, my friend was able to get ~ 40 mpg doing 65-70 mph over a 500 or so mile round trip. I don't know the details of the conditions at the time, but that seems pretty good to me.

Yeah, some of the guys on cleanmpg are getting 60MPG out of those.

(Yes, how you drive plays a large role in what sort of economy you get.)
