Anybody drive just to burn some gas to check next tank?

I did tonight.
Drove nice winding back country roads for about 40 miles just because it was a beautiful evening, almost no traffic to interfere with some eoc and I can't wait to run the odo up and tank down so I can check my next mpg.

You could argue that I just wasted some gas but to me it was cheap entertainment, enjoyable, peaceful, relaxing.

Counterproductive so for me, no.

However, I can't claim every single time I fire up an engine it's for something essential or productive.

Just fill up and track it with the ecomodder fuel log.

I'm using the log and I could have just filled up tonight but a bunch of things are making me hold off on the next fill up..
1)Too many of the miles on this tank were freeway (not great hyper-miling).
2)Had passengers onboard a lot of the miles as well, just me=lighter.
3)Just today I removed my mirrors and want that effect to kick in for a few more miles.
4) only had 250 or so miles on this tank so far. With a 600+ mile range I want to run the tank lower. The more miles I use to calculate mileage the lower the margin of error is.
5) I'm shooting for a 70mpg tank so I wanted some best case scenerio miles added.

Jeeze, am I getting to anal about this? Obsessed?
Lets go with addicted. It is fun.

It would be better to perform individual mods a few tanks at a time, without changing your driving. You won't be able to see the effects of your mirror delete now that its part of an unmodified tank. And no need to wait until empty to fill up, you can check mpg by filling up anytime during the tank.

I never drive unless I need to. After all, the best way to save on fuel is to not use any

If you want to fill the tank, then just fill it. If you want to drive somewhere just to go there then that is your choice. I drive-ride to places I do not HAVE to go all the time, but then I don't feel like living like a hermit.

My Fiesta is sitting in the garage after our little vacation to Ocean City. I try to ride the bike whenever the weather permits and the wife is not coming along. Nasty weather and I drive the Fiesta. I try to limit the truck to trips that need it's capabilities since it gets half the mileage of the bike.

I will do short fills when I have done something which might improve my mileage.

regards
Mech

Do what you want bud Everyone has a different motivation for ecomodding as shown here http://ecomodder.com/forum/showthrea...oll-25821.html Do whatever you enjoy. I try to find reasons to make a drive sometimes to finish off tanks, but I haven't been able to just joyride for the heck of it. The challenge of beating my best is always my motivation for hypermiling/ecomodding.

I'm sorry if my attitude is offensive or maybe "off spirit" of this board. Saving fuel is not the entire reason I'm hyper-mileing. It is a game that I'm playing against myself. Always trying to beat my own personal best. I'll never have the best fuel economy car in the world and I am not competing with anyone else on here or elsewhere. I like setting higher and higher goals and meeting them. I have improved quite a bit for 4 tanks in a row. I'm not concerened with which modifications or driving styles return exactly how much improvement. It is ok for me to change more than one thing at a time and not know individual improvements. There is nothing new I can add to this board, it's all been covered.

For relaxation or entertainment some go to a movie, some go bowling. Going for a drive and burning up less than one gallon of gas was a pretty cheap night out. A peaceful break from the kids, an hour of solitude and a break from my hectic life is valuable to me. I didn't even turn the radio on, just enjoyed a beautiful evening driving some country roads.

I beg to differ that filling up anytime is as accurate as filling up when you have a low tank. How do you know exactly how full to fill it. Do you stop at the exact same full point every time? Every pump is different. That can change a tiny bit every time. Exactly how much fuel you add is crutial to what the fe was on the last tank. My car is old enough that I have to rely on odometer vs voulme of gas consumed. The margin of error decreases with more fuel being added. If you only need to add One gallon to top off and you accidentally fill it 6.4 ounces more than the last fill up you just added 5% more gas than you should have (6.4 oz is 5% of 128 oz/1 gallon). If you accidentally add 6.4 oz extra on a Ten gallon fill up your error drops from 5% to .5%. Much more accurate fe checking.

Re: short fills: very true; we used to have huge debates about them.

My "contest" comment was because there have been folks who'd game their gas logs to pump up the numbers.

As noted, not every trip is essential. However, I've never done a drive to finish a tank for the purpose of estimating fe.
