Thanks to the few who actually had positive comments to add.

Don't take the comments personally. You asked a legitimate question and people gave you their opinions. If we all had to only say positive things and agree on everything, this forum would be pretty dull.

Eventually if you get some sort of mpg gauge...then you can test any mods you've made right then and there to see if there is any MPG gains.

But no, i dont drive just to burn gase to check the next tank.

I rarely drive just to burn down a tank, but I have been known to "cruise" or drive around for the sake of sight seeing or just for the joy of driving. If you like it, do it. As a hypermiler, you're using less gas than most people who drive around for no reason.

Car enthusiasm is just another hobby. It uses gas, yes, but knitting uses yarn, which involves raising sheep. Cooking as a hobby wastes foodstuffs. Horseback riding wastes hay and grain.

Do what you like, and if you like driving go drive. I like to set a historic or cultural landmark as a destination and go for a drive...

I love driving. My new found love for hypermiling/ecomodding makes driving even better.
I've gone for a drive almost every night this week after midnight or so. This week has been exceptionally difficult.
I don't turn the radio on. It's just me and the road.
I drive down near Niagara Falls, and follow the river out to the lake. Then follow the lake for a bit.
It's relaxing and soothing.
So I burned a gallon or two. That's ok. Life happens.

I have been tempted to do this because of curiosity about the effect of some change on my fuel economy. My inner-cheapskate always wins and I don't do it. It sort of feels like cheating anyway, I would feel like I had somehow gamed the system and that the current tank didn't count. That's as big a deterrent as the cost of fuel is.

If I want to go for a ride just to ride, I'll hop on my motorcycle and get 55mpg+ while driving with no attempt at efficiency and enjoying the smell of the fields as I go by.

I really enjoy just cruising around and taking in the views around where I live and work. I very much enjoy driving my CRX and Civic and often catch myself taking a needless drive or going for an extra 20 mile cruise with no destination in mind to burn some extra gas and then filling up to brag about my excellent MPG's.

To each is there own. I like to see my high MPG numbers just as much as I enjoy driving around aimlessly enjoying my free time, so yes...I do the same as you do
