With today's new aerosol technology you can do this. It won't be as strong but will work. The key is to not let fuel get on it and set for more a few minutes.

The other down side is the size of the paint job. If the stripe is only 12" or less wide then you should be OK. Any bigger the you will have mottling (tiger striping) issues.

Actually, most of it is no wider than about 8 inches. It's widest at the back of the boat (where the hull curves under, and you don't really see it as well). So that sounds like the way to go.
