I know he explained the aluminum was a backing but if you're going to do all that I wonder what purpose the lawn edging serves.

I'd agree that it's overkill, but I only got 3-years out of mine, and that was with repairing it with foil tape.

There must be different flavors of lawn edging because the stuff I have is totally rigid enough for the job all by itself.

I've no reason to believe that any of my lawn edging air dams have appreciably deformed at speed, but hey- if it's overbuilt it will last you longer.
My Civic's air dam is literally less than three inches off the ground and it's still hanging on. It scrapes on everything.

Her are some more pics.
Here you can see my basic construction using aluminum and sheet metal screws. It is very ridged, feels sturdy enough to where none of its problems should be caused by wind. Only weighs about 2 pounds.
This is my first attempt at Mig welding aluminum in about 8 years.
This is what it looks like removed from the truck.
And with a coat of primer and truck bed liner.

If only that corner was radiussed, I'd say you would be done.

here is my lawn edging.
Worked out pretty nice.
I sure don't think it needs any backing.
Good thing it gives, car so low that some driveways get me.
Even those haven't hurt it yet.

Maybe I should have mentioned I wanted to drop the air dam down 9 inches, leaving me with about 7.5 inches of ground clearance.
The lawn edging gives a little more than 5 inches when I cut the square end off.

Did you make sure your air dam is only as low as your lowest suspension component?
otherwise, if your airdam is too big, any FE gains would be cancelled out due to having increased frontal area. You'll know for sure if you play with different air dam sizes.
