Article: Chevrolet Volt in final phase

Hello -

Here's another Volt update :

Autocar - Chevrolet Volt in final phase - 21 August 2008
Quote:
...

When complete, the car will have a top speed around 100 mph, a 0-60 mph time of around 9.0 seconds, and a typical battery range of 40 miles, before the European-derived 1.4 litre four-cylinder "Family Zero" engine needs to be started to extend its range by generating more power.

...

The task now is simplify and miniaturise the components to fit a smaller, Astra-derived package, including a 180 kilogram T-shaped battery pack that fits along the transmission tunnel and under the rear seat. At around 1600kg the Volt is substantially heavier than an Astra, but its overall weight distribution is closer to 50:50.

Chevrolet Volt design chief Bob Boniface has revealed that the production car will look "a lot" like the original prototype, but will be more aerodynamic, with simplified surfaces, rounder corners, a lower roofline, a sealed grille, a minimised frontal area and "considerably better" all-round than the Toyota Prius.

The production Volt's aerodynamic performance improves on the concept by over "120 aerodynamic counts", the equivalent of reducing its mass by 120kg, or adding six miles to its range under electric power. The production model will carry enough fuel for a total range close to 400 miles.

i like the whole volt idea, it gets good mileage 50's and can plug in, so it is an electric car that can get a long range, it gets rid of all the disadvantages that people come up with except for "i don't want to have to plug it in every single night." (i wouldn't mind plugging it in" The whole problem is that it will most likely be too expensive for me. Being 17 I don't make that much money. (i wish it was around or under $20,000)

I like the idea a lot though.

Hi,

That picture is of the old Volt -- they should have used the pictures of the "new" production version.

Yeah, but this car will actually work. The prototype design was horribly unaerodynamic and would never have worked.

IMO it looks very nice.

To make it more affordable they had to move it onto an existing platform. My Chevy dealer friend was worried it would look like the current Malibu (not an ugly car by any means) because he'd seen several powertrain mules in Malibus. This car is based on the smaller Astra platform. Hmmm. It kinda looks like the love-child of a Malibu and a Prius.

The original Volt design WAS a 4 door, but cleverly disguised as a coupe.

Oops, good catch! I thought the Volt was a 2 door. Mea culpa.

have they released any current prices, it may go down a bit because it is smaller and on an existing platform
