The bottom of the "U" typically corresponds to highway cruising speed... or likely specific rpm shift points on fuel economy tests. So it's either "cycle beating" or simply a way of encouraging drivers to shift up at an earlier rpm. Possibly a bit of both.

There is, of course, a cam-changeover point in there somewhere for the FR-S and the MItsubishi... which can account for some of the difference.

Here on the Mazda3, you can see the initial dip in torque occurs before the dip due to the cam changeover...
