The cops had a problem with the clear Lexan cover I had over the license plate on my boattail so I had to remove it. SC state law says there can't be anything covering the plate, so those license trim plates and covers are technically illegal if the cop chooses to notice it. You can get away with it on a run of the mill car, but not in any vehicle that tends to attract a cop's attention.

technically they can't unless your local law allows it. It gives police here a great "probable cause" to pull over a vehicle and begin writing tickets if they are in the ticket writing mood.

the VLC is neat. does anyone know if they have done a tadpole trike? seems like it would fit their philosophy of making everything as simple and light as possible.
I think a motorcycle type rear drive would work great. Make it a mild hybrid with small electric hub motors up front for reverse.

Pete, they have only built 4 wheeled cars. Hub motors would not fit, as they have a very compact suspension that is contained inside the wheel hubs.

In one of the videos on Vimeo, an early three-wheeled prototype was shown and mentioned, actually.
(Huh, this is my first post here? I thought I had made a first post a while back. No link, then.)

Okay, I stand corrected. They built 4 cars for the X-Prize and all were 4 wheel and Oliver Kuttner never mentioned a 3 wheel design going forward.
Their suspension is key to the design, and they are pretty much married to rear wheel drive only.

Been reading their blog quite a bit the last few days.
These guys rock!
Let's hope some mega corp doesn't buy it and muck it all up as happened with Aptera.
Is there a pic of their in wheel suspension anywhere? I haven't been able to find one.

Patent US8152184 - Vehicle suspension system - Google Patents is the patent for it. Plenty of diagrams.
Looks like it's the wheel, connected to a pair of leading links, connected to a pair of trailing links, connected to the beam.
Edit: Actually, the trailing links seem to be a unit, so it's mainly leading-link.
