As I have said, I oppose any technology that has the effect of appearing to (the user) assume responsibility in regards to safety. I also have a particular disdain for addictive technologies. And loath government required safety mandates in area such as automotive manufacturing and design.
So for me it's a bit of a multifacited objection. Their effectiveness or lack there of, has nothing to do with it

BIG BROTHER is the "boogie man" that hid under your bed when you were a child.
Today HE's *in* your smartphone, computer, and just about everything else.

Trying to make a joke? I haven't said anything about the government spying on anyone.

I was getting financial advice from Jalopnik again and saw this: https://gizmodo.com/android-auto-pre...-it-1707102125
The writer loved Android Auto, said it was better than anything any automaker had developed on their own, but mentioned:
Quote:
Once could argue that Google could just make Android Auto a standalone app for Android phones that would basically take over your display, so when it’s stuck to your dash it acts just like the version that’s built into cars. So why don’t they do that?
|
Has anyone developed an Android app that would do the same things?
I could replace the stock stereo with this $300 JCV unit off Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/JVC-KW-M730BT...T/?tag=at88-20
The top review mentioned a dash kit, but Amazon did not link any, nor backup cameras, so I really do not know how much this would cost to install on my $250 car, but think of the children!
Of course, I would lose my CD player, which doesn't work. I would also lose my tape player.
Who still has tapes?!

Here is a back-up camera for $80.
I did not see anything I would consider on Amazon, I try to avoid purchasing brands I do not know. I do not know Accele, but I give Crutchfield the benefit of the doubt.
I found plenty of back-up cameras with monitors for less than that, but I did not know the brands.

Now if only it'd recognize a tree-structured directory, instead of munging them all into a flat file system with every directory displayed as "Folder XX".
Same lack of thought in design applies to backup cameras, or at least the ones I've seen. They only work when you're in reverse. Now if they'd work all the time, and apply a little image processing to reduce headlight glare and improve night visibility, they'd be useful.

They certainly would be more useful and could even replace the review mirrors with a couple of strategically located cameras.

Why would you want a more expensive and complicated solution, when a $5 mirror works fine? I could see it for a few niche uses though.

Just think of how bad the average driver is, and then realize that half of them are worse than that.
My sister rolled a Toyota Camery 5 times, on a straight familiar road, with perfect driving conditions. She had drifted across the center line due to inattention, aggressively corrected right, went into the soft shoulder, aggressively corrected left, and initiated barrel roll.
She has also rear-ended a person while not distracted at all. Her excuse "he took longer to make his turn than normal".
I've been in minor accidents due to intentionally pushing the capabilities of the vehicle; a different kind of stupid than just being a bad driver.
Hopefully automated systems will help mitigate stupid.

James, the stereo\backup camera would be distracting? I am not trying to stream fooseball games!
DSM, does your $5 mirror show a rabid badger right behind your car?
